The historical biosphere that you enter begins with the Presidential election in a Hoover failed America. The Depression casts a dark cloud and America goes with a candidate who promises change and reforms &#8230; but what will be the final price?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #008000;\">My Library review:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>I have loved all of the Turtledove alternative histories and if this is the introduction to a new series he has outdone himself. Considering the terrifying alternatives, we have running for President this is an all too possible script for the future. Without giving it away, I hope you read this, because not only is it timely, but it\u2019s a GREAT read. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Possibly his best construction ever!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/WolfinWinter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4418\" src=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/WolfinWinter.jpg\" alt=\"WolfinWinter\" width=\"315\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/WolfinWinter.jpg 315w, http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/WolfinWinter-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a> <\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 20px;\"><strong>The wolf in winter <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>by John Connolly<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Is a haunting crime solving mystery that involves history, religion and a community &#8220;Prosperous&#8221; Maine that somehow always survives when others suffer. It further explores the plight of the have-not\/ the homeless and does a fantastic job of enlightening the reader of their sad reality.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #008000;\">My library review:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>&#8220;Prosperous&#8221; shuns outsiders and has dark secrets it would rather not reveal.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>&#8220;Pulse-pounding&#8221; it may not have been, but I am recovering from two surgery procedures and am on pain meds. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed this somewhat disturbing book. The plot and characters are very much different from the norm. So are some of the locations. Dealing with less than attractive backgrounds such as homelessness was very different from mysteries or novels about Hollywood crime.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>The antagonists are complicated and so is the story. This would have been an all nighter so thoroughly did it capture my attention.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva;\"><strong>For shear reading pleasure (or not**) the following novel was both fascinating and exciting to read. Richly told, it portrayed both sides, warts and all. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Devil&#8217;s Backbone: The Modoc War,<\/span> 1872-3 (The Plainsmen Series #5) by Terry C. Johnston <span style=\"color: #008000;\">My Library review:<\/span> &#8220;So much was not taught in our schools that when I see a book like this, I wish the author could have been my teacher. Wonderfully written with great characters. **A heartbreaking book as well.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">The book<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> The Dying Grass\u00a0 A Novel of the Nez Perce War\u00a0<\/span> by William T Vollmann was an even harder book to read and was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT to found in my library.<\/span> \ud83d\ude41 <b>This National Book Award winner takes readers inside the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians.<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/West-of-here.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4425\" src=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/West-of-here.jpg\" alt=\"West of here\" width=\"314\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/West-of-here.jpg 314w, http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/West-of-here-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/a> <\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">West of Here<\/span> by Jonathon Evison<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Port Bonita (Port Angeles WA) is about to boom, it just needs something.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>This loving and carefully fictionalized book has an unusual means of storytelling. About 1\/3 of the way through you get it! Jonathan Evison writes colorfully and very carefully. I am amazed that he didn&#8217;t get snuffed for some of his characterizations. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">On Port Angeles &#8230; <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;looking out across the expanse of an empty parking lot. its funny how something can keep getting bigger even after it&#8217;s dead.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Like Ken Kesey you get swept away by the majesty of the Olympic Peninsula and the rich list of characters portrayed. When I finally closed this book, I felt I had closed it on some new friends I had just made and lost all to soon.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #008000;\">Library review:<\/span> If you are a fan of Western Washington history, specifically Clallam County, Port Angeles, the Elwha Dam you will LOVE this book. The author transports you into two time slots. The era when the dam was built, the settlers of Port Angeles and the relations of the two Clallam tribes. (Lower Elwha and Jamestown) The second era is the recent present &#8211;before the dam was to be removed. Port Bonita, the dam itself and many Port Angeles businesses are renamed, but remain very identifiable. I suspect this was to prevent lawsuits from the not too innocent and the sometimes-unflattering descriptions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva;\">On my Google+ blog I immediately got two great suggestions:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The Brother Gardeners:<\/span> by by Andrea Wulf and the<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> Nicolo and Lymond series<\/span> by Dorothy Dunnett. These are UMPTEEN books that sound great. Best of all, my library has them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">Early plant explorers such as David Douglas have been neglected in my list, but they certainly have been read. I often thought that Douglas&#8217; fascinating life story would have been a fantastic movie. A friend of mine actually tried to buy the film rights to it. Though not the action packed thriller I would have liked to have directed, \u2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Finding David Douglas\u2019<\/span>was a collaborative documentary between Oregon and Scottish forestry communities.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">David Douglas was an adventurer as well as a botanist and like Reginald Farrer lived an all too short life dying in an *apparent* accident in a Hawaiian cattle pit that was already occupied. This element of stumble dumbness was never believable to me and I subscribe to the &#8220;he was snuffed out&#8221; theory. This is not the ending for a man who would be the first European to attempt to ascend Mt. Hood.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The Collector: David Douglas and the Natural History of the Northwest <\/span>by Jack Nisbet (Exceptional)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The Tree Collector: The Life and Explorations of David Douglas<\/span> by Ann Lindsay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">In this genre:<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> &#8216;The Plant Hunters&#8217;<\/span> by Tyler Whittle, or<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> The Plant Hunters: True Stories of Their Daring Adventures to the Far Corners of the Earth<\/span> (READ) by Anita Silvey<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Collector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4442\" src=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Collector-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Collector\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Collector-194x300.jpg 194w, http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/The-Collector.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva;\">More of botanist explorers who enriched our gardens.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">REGINALD FARRER: Traveller, Botanist and Flower Painter<\/span> by F.H. Fisher. Stocked by our library, I must have checked it out three or four times. As I was the ONLY reader of it, I thought they should sell it to me. Sadly, I continue to keep waiting! It is a very old book and taking up all the bookshelf room.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Pathfinder: John Charles Fremont and the Course of American Empire<\/span> by Tom Chaffin (Wonderful)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pathfinder.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4444\" src=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pathfinder-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"pathfinder\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pathfinder-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/sweetgeodes.com\/senft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pathfinder.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a> <\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">John C. Fr\u00e9mont was an American explorer, military officer, and politician. His role as a surveyor and wilderness exploration fascinated me. The journeys with kit Carson and Thomas Fitzpatrick would include much of the Pacific Northwest before he would sneak into California in 1844.<\/span><\/strong> <\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0The coming war between the US and Mexico was imminent and in 1845 he and his armed party defied Mexican authorities &#8230; and that is where the fun begins. With a battalion of volunteers *Fremont and Stockton* captured the 31st. state. The book I mentioned was candid and eloquent and the four main explorations is straight out of a Hollywood script. The \u2018over the mountains, across rivers, through deserts we shall go.\u2019 That he was conceited, insubordinate and a political gambler certainly makes him an interesting read. Considering recent complications, I am now looking at Video games. Found two, pruned down to one. Even these are political and strategic in nature. Government power broking &#8230; alliances and that sort of thing.\u00a0 &#8216;<\/span><em>Making History: The Calm &amp; The Storm&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> It has been decades since I played with one. Even asked the eBay sellers if the disks came with a manual. \ud83d\ude42 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AFTER<\/span> buying a cheap and goofy <em>Western 11 Sim City type,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> I discovered that you can do the same FREE online with games such as Grepolis.<\/span> Not bad!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> After having 20 lbs.of fluid drawn out of my belly (4.5 liters) I feel like I can move again. Now its diuretic tablets and perhaps a training bra, should the side effects happen. Flat stomach comes with a price &#8211; breast growth. Now I am certain that the &#8216;trickster deity is female.
