Unlike the greens they need to be cooked with the onion stage.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> **For a more Indian flavor add turmeric, coriander powder, crushed cumin and mustard seeds. \u00bd tsp to 1 tsp of ea. They should be well crushed and added to the very beginning of the process.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 18pt;\">Preparation: <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rinse in cold water-colander.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> Soak dal for 15 minutes in hot water. (You can reduce the cooking time and fuel by soaking dal)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Chop onion, tomatoes, garlic and keep it ready.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan on high heat for one minute. Reduce the heat to low, add the<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">onion and red pepper flakes or chili powder.\u00a0Saut\u00e9 for one minute or until the onions become<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">translucent. Only then add the garlic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">While cooking , drain the tomatoes, but reserve he juice. Chop<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">them up and add to the pan. (** At this point you could add the basil and parsley as well or wait until the next step.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Add the lentils, and cook for two minutes, stirring all the ingredients to blend together. Add the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> stock and the tomato juice &#8211; the salt and bring it to a boil.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> Reduce the temperature and simmer in a covered pot and cook for 30 minutes. Transfer \u00bd of the lentil<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">mixture to a blender (or all if you want a puree texture) Return to the pan cover and simmer for<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">another 10 minutes. A crock pot can also be used. The soup is ready when ALL the lentils are tender.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> Lentils have different cooking times so make your own judgment on this. Strain it using a strainer.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\"> Add pepper powder to taste and serve hot with sourdough bread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Note \u2013 do not use the pepper flakes or chili powder if feeding to a toddler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS,Geneva; font-size: 14pt;\">Garnish with Kale, Parsley, chopped green onions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">You don&#8217;t stop laughter because you grow old.
